'Export to'

Develocity improvement by providing
'Export to' platformized  feature.
The 'Export to' feature is one of the parts of the
Cairo collection features.

What is Cairo? Cairo is a JavaScript library which provides React components (on top of style-react library), for querying, storing & visualizing collection-based data.

Cairo was created in order to reduce redundant repetitions, bugs and tests. As well to increase develosity by providing fast development, latest
UX guidelines, centralized BI schema.

This case study presents the process of creating
the 'Export to' feature.
Role

Senior Product Designer

Brief

Create a unified platformized 'Export to' feature

which must provide the export to CSV ability for any

Wix product.

Challenge

This project was targeted to reach two different aims: providing the ability to integrate 'Export to' feature for any Wix product with minimal effort and answer tons of users' requests to have the feature in the products they use on daily basis to manage their business.

Discovery

Goals:

My discovery objectives were:

  • How many Wix products already have 'Export to' feature.

  • How many Wix products would love to have the feature according to their users' requests.

  • General usage of the feature though all the products.

  • Which minimal/maximum capabilities the feature should have to meet users' expectations.

  • Which types of files our users use to/would like to export.

  • What is the minimal/maximum amount of data our users usually export.

An average Bookings user exports the booking list around  700 times.

Some Stores users export products list more than 4.200 times during a week.

Getting The Data

With the help of our data analysts, I found out that in some products the 'Export to' feature was the essential tool for

our users.

Feature Request

After reaching out to our support assistants and checking users' feature request the insights were:

  • Some products are actually losing their top users only because these products are not supporting the export option.

  • In some products which already support the feature the users requested to expand the feature capabilities.

Almost all the products which support the feature had requests to expand or improve the Export capabilities.

Internal Products Research

I collected all the Wix products to see which:

  • Already have the feature - what are the feature capabilities / what is users' general satisfaction with these capabilities / are they looking for additional capabilities.

  • Don't have a feature - there is a feature request.

During the research I found 8 products which already had the feature. I analyzed which capabilities they supported.

Additional Insights:
  • 99% of the internal products support only CSV files.
  • Several products have a request to add additional file formats or have the ability to export different kinds of CSV.

Analysis

Following my research, I broke all the existing/desired capabilities  down into groups in order to define which are most important for MVP and which we can add in
the future.
First Phase - MVP
  • Synchronic flow

  • Export whole data set

  • Export filtered items

  • Export selected items

  • Export selected & filtered items

  • Support general CSV files

  • Localization

Second Phase
  • Support large amount of data (a-sync)

  • Enable to filter by date range

  • Export Excel & different types of CSV

Third Phase
  • Support additional file formats

  • An option to choose the exported columns

  • An option to reorder the exported columns

Competitors & Visual Research

After I figured out based on my initial research and analysis which capabilities were essential, I needed some inspiration before I started wireframing.

Competitors Research

Visual Research

I took a look at some competitors like Shopify, Ecwid, Squarespace and more to understand which export capabilities they support in general and which of the solutions they provide are relevant for our 'Export to' feature.

I also collected from our competitors and internal products visual elements which can be relevant for our feature implementation.

By going through multiple iterations, I prioritized the core elements of the feature.

Sketches

I created quick sketches, playing with different components that could be used for different use-cases. Doing so allowed me to pick what UI components I liked within each sketch and figure out what would match well together, but also answer the feature needs.

Wireframes

After multiple iterations and brainstorming sessions, the product team and I came up with the concept of using the Modal solution. It allowed us to unify the UX for all existing use-cases, and also to prepare the feature for the coming additional capabilities.

The Result

And finally, meet the 'Export to' feature which provides easy integration inside any Wix product and dramatically increases a number of users who can use the feature.

'Happy' flow

Advanced flow

 Product Release & Next Steps

The MVP flow was first released with our first internal design partner. The feedback we got was extremely positive, since we added the option to filter by date range and three additional internal product started to use it, several others planned to integrate the feature soon.
Our next steps include:
  • To support exporting large amount of data.
  • Add additional export formats.
  • To support the ability to choose the exported columns.
